Chakra 2 - The Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra is associated with the color orange and its Sanskrit name is Swadhisthana. Its symbol is represented by a lotus of 6 petals. There comes a time when we want to move out of the family structure and look for other relationships that will satisfy our emotional and physical needs. We begin to individuate, learning what it means to be “our own person”. Thus, we often “rebel” against the group. However, the strength of our second chakra determines just how well we can “stand on our own two feet” and make our own way in the world. The second chakra also deals with issues of control, because when we become more aware of our external reality, a desire to control it arises. This desire is usually motivated by fear—especially the fear of losing control.

In fact, the “flight or fight” response falls under the realm of the second chakra. The number two denotes duality, so the second chakra also deals with male/female, yin/yang, positive/negative, and so on. Money issues, especially financial viability, falls under the second chakra, as does sexuality. Archetypally, it’s important to examine where we “sell out”, or prostitute ourselves (Prostitute Archetype). This chakra also governs the flow of power between us and others.
