Indigo. Crystals. Children of the New Millenium. The Spiritualists. Healers. Philosophers. "The New Kids".  You may have heard of one or all of the above terms describing the psychological and personality patterns of children born within the last 10 years or so. However, the Indigo and Crystal phenomenon is not recent as some would believe.

Indigos and Crystals have always been with us just like the other auric personalities. However, their numbers have usually been quite small especially in comparison with the other auric personalities. According to the late Dr. Barbara Bowers, there are 14 auria colors that correspond to certain personality patterns. According to her book What Color is Your Aura?, these patterns are not reflective of socialization or parenting patterns. Rather, they indicate skills, talents, and proclivities that the child is born with. In other words, the aura is the external representation of the soul's potential.

Bowers noticed that these 14 personality patterns have different strengths, and she grouped them into 4 families:

Physical Family
Physical (environment) Colors Red, Orange, and Magenta
Physical (body) Colors Yellow and Physical Tan

Mental Family
Mental Colors  Mental Tan, Nurturing Tan, and Loving Tan

Emotional Family
Emotional Colors Lavender, Blue

Spiritual Family
Spiritual Colors Violet, Indigo, Crystal

Colors within a family have a common way of expressing themselves and share a dominant organizing principle by which these colors approach life and decision making.  The Physical Family relate to the world by interacting with their physical environment. Understanding who they are and their place in the world is based on their physical interaction with it--the realm of the 5 senses. In Jungian terms, Physicals would be known as Sensates. Unlike the other Families, they are usually only concerned with the tangible.

Those in the Mental Family of colors think about the world and their place in it, and their primary process is cerebral. They love ideas and systems, and their biggest challege is attempting to deal with their emotions logically. In Jungian terms, these ones would likely be iNtuitive Thinkers (NT).

Emotional/Spiritual Families tend to have an internal locus of control, basing their actions on thoughts and/or emotions. In Jungian terms, these Families would likely be iNtuitive Feelers (NF) or iNtuitive Thinkers (NT). Feelings and intuition is the realm of these Families, and wishes, hopes, and dreams are much more important than tangibles. Abstraction tends to hold more "reality" for them than the drudgery of everyday living such as balancing a checkbook.

The Violets, Indigos, and Crystals

You may hear the terms Crystals and Indigos used interchangeably, with the belief that Crystals are a type of Indigo. When discussing Millenial shifts and the "new kids", you don't see discussion of Violet energy. However, based on my study of personality systems, observation, and personal experience, I believe that Violets, Crystals and Indigos are connected, and Bowers choosing to group Violets with Indigos and Crystals in the Spiritual Family seem to bear this out.    When interacting with other adult Indigos or reading about them, they seem to fall into one of two camps regarding how they approach people and life: the first group is extremely sensitive emotionally and strives for harmony while the latter tends to be a "cool customer" who views hyper-sensitivity as unreasonable. These ones are also more confrontational and sometimes thought to be trouble-makers.

Violets are known as the visionaries who dream up idealistic futures and have the wherewithal to make it happen. They tend to be passionate, confrontational, highly intuitive thinkers who are focused on making the world a better place. In fact, they have a clock ticking inside them that says "Do something important...and yesterday!" When describing adult Indigos, you'll often hear them called "forerunners"--those who wield a psychic machete that cuts through deception, old energy, and BS. I believe many of these forerunners are Violet/Indigo hybrids--and the Indigos that are most likely to be confrontational "troublemakers". They may have even been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.     According to the book The Crystal Children - A Guide To The Newest Generation of Psychic and Sensitive Children by Doreen Virtue, Indigos have a warrior spirit. Their aura color is that of the third eye chakra which regulates clairvoyance which is the ability to see energy, visions, and spirits--so many Indigos have this gift. The Crystals are the generation that will benefit from the Indigo's trailblazing--making it a safer world for the sensitive Crystals. About Indigos, Virtue writes:

One of the spiritual gifts of the Indigos is their ability to sniff out dihonesty, like a dog senses fear. Indigos know when they're being lied to, patronized, or manipulated. And since their collective purpose is to usher in a new world of integrity, the Indigos' inner lie detectors are integral. Again, this warrior spirit threatens some adults. Additionally, the Indigos are unable  to conform to dysfunctional situations at home, work, or school. They don't have the ability to dissociate from their feelings and pretend that everything's okay...unless they're medicated or sedated.

The adult Indigos who are more emotionally sensitive and harmonious are Crystal/Indigo hybrids in my opinion. According to Nancy Ann Tappe who was interviewed by Jan Tober in the book The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived, all of the Physical Colors will be gone within 20 years, except for red. All will be left are Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual colors. Tappe also outlines 4 different types of Indigos (Humanist, Conceptual, Artist, and Interdimensional) and believes they all have a Violet component, which confirms my research and observations about the “Violet factor”.
