This is a continuation of my interview with astrologer Barry Cowger as we discuss the purpose of the Midheaven (MC) in an astrological chart, as well as how each of the 12 signs expresses itself at the MC. This article addresses the Libra Midheaven.
Janet: Barry, how does a Libra Midheaven express itself in an individual's life?
Barry: Libra on the Midheaven represents a fundamental shift from an internal set of values, and how those may or may not 'jibe' with the world at large, to a consciousness that is far more outward turned and instinctively socially involved than we have seen so far. (We have gone from the lower half of the chart, the first six signs, to the upper half, to the final six signs). Thus, you have people who need to find their way, surely, but within the larger set of social rules and values that define any social structure, family, bureaucracy, company, or any other organizational institution.
Janet: If memory serves me right, the bottom half of the astrological chart (Aries through Virgo) is oriented more towards self and home, whereas the top half of the astrological chart (Libra through Pisces) is oriented more towards others and the world. Is this correct?
Barry: Yes this is correct. It is relative to a more personal (1-6) or social (7-12) emphasis of the life.
With Libra on the MC an individual is attempting to discover their own values for living their lives and how these would, or would not, be in harmony with others. Discovering that they are in sync with one or more people, they are more than happy to work for that common goal. This is what I call the 'teamwork' sign on the MC. You know all those framed pictures that have an inspirational message that has to do with people working together for a common cause?
Those are probably created by a Libra MC person. And of course this is in line with their artistic inclinations: to make the world a prettier place. If you had a bunch of Libra MC's in a group they would be thinking: "What are the other people here thinking about, and am I in the majority or not?" They excel at being able to pick up cues from others' behaviors and actions is a skill that helps Libra MC people make their way in the world. On the other hand, taking in too many ideas and 'recommendations' and tending to go along with consensus, social trends, fashion, etc., can take this person down roads that they never would have chosen had they been more in tune with their own values.
Libra MC people are learning how to balance their own needs with those of others. First you see this accommodating side, then this very 'my way or the highway' side when they reach the extremes that they are destined to reach throughout their lives. And in terms of this dynamic on their Midheaven, it's not so much about raw 'success' as it is about feeling that they are successfully contributing to others and for the social good while also doing what they really, really want to do. I would say that this in itself is truly an art form, yes? Again, the balance or scales are always working in one way or the other.
For those who remain centered in the flux of changing conditions, values and social trends and remain true to themselves in the midst of such push-and-pull, they can become an inspiration to those who are still looking for their own center, rudder, or direction in life. A career (MC) counselor (Libra) or a free-lance consultant would be two good choices. Again, Libra is 'other oriented' and can really feel fulfilled when it has been instrumental in others' success.
