Astrology - Midheaven in Scorpio
This is a continuation of my interview with astrologer Barry Cowger as we discuss the purpose of the Midheaven (MC) in an astrological chart, as well as how each of the 12 signs expresses itself at the MC. This article addresses the Scorpio Midheaven.

Janet: Barry, how does the Scorpio Midheaven placement manifest itself in a person's life?

Barry: Those of us who have Scorpio on the Midheaven (Medium Coeli or MC) are learning about the limits of our own personal power within a social context. There are many ways to understand our limits or what we can and cannot do in the world. Sometimes we clash with others to understand this, at other times we do battle with ourselves. In either case, we are attempting to expand our sphere of influence. If we speak of internal battles we are wrestling with our own inner demons as those confront the limits of our own personal psychology. To the degree that we are successful in our inner world, will be the degree to which we can have a positive influence on others. If it is power that we seek in the external world, we will certainly come across others who also seek to expand their power and influence. Thus, power struggles will often ensue.

I've heard it said that everyone 'finds their own level.' This is no revelation. What is important is that Scorpio MC people will confront others who are also coming from that very level, for better or worse. In the lower levels, the Scorpion will fight to the death and will not hesitate to 'bring down' others even if it means their own demise. No 'light' is coming from such people. It's a one way road if you get caught on that level. A higher level, there will be battles, but both people can see that there is something larger than the two (or more) of them. Seeing this, one or both can begin to work toward that. In other words, something is beginning to come about through their conflicts that elevates (transforms) them both. Most of us who have a Scorpio MC are coming from this level.

Then from a higher level still, there are really few (or no more) personal demons as symbols of personal transformation to wrestle with. Rather, such a person is more like the eagle, who through their own past lives has already been through the lower stuff, who has now become a beacon for growth and transformation for others.

Janet: I was thinking about the higher levels of Scorpio as you were talking, which are very much like the Eagle. And, with transforming self and others, this higher energy is very much like the Phoenix which is also associated with the sign of Scorpio.

Barry: Scorpio MC people must be willing to 'die' for something. Of course I'm not referring to actual death, although that has most certainly happened. I'm speaking more about something that a person will pour their heart and soul into for the social, political or economic good. Passion is something that Scorpio Midheaven people must feel when they begin to think about what they could do in their own professional lives. If they have a single-minded passion, if it is something they would do whether they get paid or not, they are probably on the right road. This is the 'No BS' sign on the Midheaven: real world, real people, real problems and issues that the Scorpio MC person wholeheartedly throws themselves into for the greater good. One final thought for this placement: Change yourself and you can begin to change the world.
