“People around the world have already grown accustomed to praying and asking their preferred vision of the deity, spiritual figures, guardian angels, wise mentors, and spirit guides for help. Very often, the divine forces that help us are actually our own ancestors.” – Master Pun Yin (from the companion booklet)
In an innovative fusion of East meets West, artist Amy Zerner teamed up with her wordsmith husband, Monte, and Feng Shui master Pun Yin, to design an attractive, portable altar for ancestor veneration with the colorful Spirit of the Ancestors Altar Kit.
According to Pun Yin and Monte, beseeching ancestors for insight, guidance and blessings has been an integral daily practice among many Eastern traditions. Mostly foreign in the West, incorporating the memory and spirit of ancestors—often accompanied by an invocation and a small offering of fresh flowers or tokens—remains the central way individuals keep the memory of their loved ones alive.
Beyond mere respectful remembrance, however, ancestor veneration invites the dearly departed to continue their vital influence even from the Other Side. In the 30-page companion book to the Spirit of the Ancestors Altar Kit, the authors differentiate ancestor veneration from ancestor worship, maintaining that daily communion with those who have passed on as merely an extension of the relationship shared on the earthly plane.
In fact, say the authors, because passed-on ancestors now reside on a limitless plane, they can help us even more than they could from their limited earthly existence.
However, the Spirit of the Ancestors Altar Kit need not be used only for ancestor veneration, but can also hold the picture, name or symbol of any deity, angel or ascended master.
Using the helpful oval pattern in the booklet, individuals can trace then insert pictures of family members, gods/goddesses, or admired others in the frame of the altar, which stands about 9 inches high and can be taken anywhere. This lovely kit also comes with approximately 60 sticks of yummy-smelling sandalwood incense and a round terra cotta incense holder with a sunflower motif.
There is an elongated rectangular base emanating from the central frame, providing ample space for small tokens, symbols or Tarot/oracle cards to reinforce your association with the ancestors or for any questions/concerns you may have.
If you’d like to incorporate ancestor veneration into your spiritual practice, or perhaps would like to have a portable altar to take with you on your travels, the Spirit of the Ancestors Altar Kit would be perfect for these purposes.
